LEVENSON

After receiving a contract from developer Vesper, our studio developed the design of landscape architecture of the territory of the low-rise block ‘Levenson’. The space is a well-balanced combination of historical legacy and modern design.

The block is located in Patriarch’s Ponds and is part of an architectural complex designed by Fyodor Schechtel. The Levenson typography was erected in 1900 and specialized in printing for Imperial theatres. The studio Tsimailo Lyashenko and Partners were responsible for the architecture of the complex.

The association of the site with printing is what we based the landscape architecture on. We used printing ink as a source of inspiration for the choice of main colour of the design. The colour and the properties of ink are reflected in materials and water bodies set up, while the artistic nature of printed characters acts as the main point of reference for choosing street furniture.

Water is the binding element of the design. Similar to ink, it spreads across the terrain accentuating main areas. To create the effect, we used black materials with different texture. The waterfall further down the site acts as a source of “that ink”, from which water flows down dark-coloured granite flumes, connecting all the areas and creating a single visual image of the territory.

The combination of different architectural buildings and uneven landscape divides the site into many areas that vary in character. Here we saw an opportunity to create a scenario of changing emotions by dividing the territory into semantic rooms. This lets us generate various feelings when staying there.

We worked scrupulously on each element, which helped us create a well-thought-out concept based on the combination of different textures and tones of dark materials. Coarse granite, glossy ceramics, smooth tiles and natural stone with a finish create a monolithic black solution thought out to the last detail. We personally contacted manufacturers and made sure all the details are correct, and that helped us make visualizations as detailed as possible and ready to be implemented.
